Taking up a 46 square mile portion of Morris County, Rockaway Township sits along the vast mountainous terrain of northern New Jersey. Lake Telemark, Hibernia and White Meadow Lake are census-designated places and unincorporated areas located within Rockaway Township. A large part of the township consists of Picatinny Arsenal, a United States Army base, used mainly for the development of new weapons technologies, especially concerning anti-terrorism.

The Rockaway Township Public School District is made up of five elementary schools and one middle school. The elementary schools in the district serve 1,875 students and include Birchwood School, Catherine A. Dwyer School, Dennis B. O’Brien School, Katherine D. Malone School and Stony Brook School. Copeland Middle School serves the 970 sixth through eighth graders in Rockaway Township. The high school students attend Morris Hills High School along with students from Rockaway Borough, Denville, and Wharton.

Route 15, Route 23, U.S. Route 46 and Interstate 80 all pass through the township. New Jersey Transit trains along run through the township.
