The Borough of Wharton, located in New Jersey’s Morris County, was brought together in 1895 by residents of Port Oram, Irondale, Luxemburg, Maryville and Mount Pleasant, who voted to join under a single entity known then as the town of Port Oram.
The borough and its surrounding region was once an important iron-producing region, its heyday arriving in the 1830’s with the construction of the Morris Canal. The Canal connected the area’s iron mines with the Delaware River and the Lehigh Canal. The Wharton area continued to mine iron into the early Twentieth Century.
Port Oram was renamed Wharton after prominent local resident Joseph Wharton, a chemist who died in 1909.
The Wharton Borough School District serves students in kindergarten through the eighth grade. High school students in the borough attend Morris Hills High School in the nearby Borough of Rockaway which also educates students from Rockaway Township and Denville Township.
Among the Wharton area’s most interesting attractions are it abandoned iron mines. Many of the mines have been preserved and are maintained by a group of researchers known as The Iron Miners who dedicate themselves to the preservation of the area’s mining history.
One of Wharton’s most notable citizens was actor Kirk Alyn who starred in the very first Superman television series in 1948. Alyn, the son of Hungarian immigrants, was born in Wharton sometime in the early Twentieth Century.
With a good school system, an interesting history and a variety of real estate available, Wharton is a borough many consider on their search for a new home in Morris County.
